Honestly, almost all standard espresso machines in each of their respective price range do not differ much from each other; it’s the buyer’s preference based on feel, style, accessories, features, and of course, the brews produced ultimately decides the purchase.

Cuisinart EM-100 Looks and Features

While the Cuisinart EM-100 does not really put anything new to the table, it does present itself in a substantial way that can be worthy enough of your hard-earned money. First off, this machine looks well-crafted and strikingly beautiful with its sleek and shiny stainless steel construction. This one deserves to be displayed proudly in your kitchen countertop as it will surely receive praise from your guests. It can brew using both ground espresso or pods, comes equipped with a built-in steam wand (with included frothing cup) and hot water option.

Cuisinart EM-100 Review: Tamping your coffee grounds can make or break your brewing experience. A delicate balance of force without over-pressing is required to achieve that optimum density that will fuse well with the machine’s capability. Over-tamping can be an issue with this machine, too-dense a tamp, and you will most likely produce bad-tasting coffee or worse, when using an excellent grind, can even clog the basket for the portafilter and prevent coffee from pouring out. A few brews and maybe a bit of trial and error could be key; what’s important is to know which method or setting is the best for your taste.

The steam nozzle is a bit longer compared to others in its class and may pose a bit of a problem for some, especially when the machine is located in a corner. However, this also allows one to use a lesser amount of milk, and the nozzle has a good range in terms of maneuverability.

This machine has front houses all the necessary controls for operating the Cuisinart EM-100. Smack dab on the center is the large function knob that provides control over three different settings to use for steam, hot water or make coffee. On the left of it is the Steam/Hot Water Knob (left direction for hot water, right for steam function), and below it is the machine’s power button. The Red Heating light atop the Steam Knob lights when the machine is adjusting the temperature of the heating system.

PROS:
  • Beautiful Stainless Steel Construction
  • Able to use Grounds or E.S.E Pods
  • Instructional DVD is a bonus
CONS:
  • Steam Nozzle length a bit too long
  • Height clearance between Portafilter and Drip Tray is short, may not accommodate larger cups
  • Over-tamping could result in some clogging issues

Conclusion

The Cuisinart EM-100 is a good, solid espresso maker. It makes delicious cups of latte or cappuccino, and the frothed milk it produces is quite lovely. The over-tamping issues mentioned here applies to all espresso makers, don’t get me wrong, it’s just that the Cuisinart EM-100 is a bit pickier in the texture of coffee that too fine a grind could result to some clogging issues. A longer distance between the Portafilter and Drip Tray would have also been better as the short clearance of this machine means your choice of cups will be limited to smaller ones. However, this is just a minor gripe that can be fixed by just getting another cup and transferring the contents. All in all, Cuisinart still made a good product here that, although not perfect, is still very capable of giving you what you need.
